Stephen Minot Weld papers, 1859-1865.

Papers of Stephen Minot Weld of Jamaica Plain, Mass., 1859-65, include letters written to his sisters Hannah Minot, Alice Balch, and Caroline (Carrie) Balch Weld during his service as a 2nd lieutenant and then captain in the 18th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, 1862-63, and lieutenant colonel and then colonel in the 56th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, 1863-64, during the Civil War. Letters describe position changes and promotions, frequent movements of his unit, general news of the war effort, and gossip about his fellow officers. Also includes letters received by Stephen from soldiers in other camps, 1861-64; letters written by Alice to Hannah, 1862-64; and miscellaneous documents pertaining to Weld family burial plots and genealogy.
